FORT MYERS, Fla. — Following two notable earthquakes in the Gulf of America region within a week including the widely felt magnitude 6.1 event on June 8 and a subsequent June 15 aftershock near Mantua, Cuba — Crocker Marine Services is encouraging Southwest Florida waterfront property owners to take proactive steps before hurricane activity intensifies.
While no widespread structural damage has been reported across Southwest Florida as a result of the seismic activity, the back-to-back events serve as a timely reminder that waterfront infrastructure should be regularly evaluated and documented before it is subjected to the additional forces of tropical storms, storm surge, and heavy wave action.
"Preparedness is always less expensive than emergency repairs. Our message to homeowners isn't that these earthquakes caused hidden damage everywhere—it's that unusual events like these are a good reason to make sure your seawall, dock, boat lift, pilings, and shoreline structures are in good condition before the peak of hurricane season." Clayton Crocker, Founder & COO, Crocker Marine Services
The June 8 earthquake, centered west-northwest of Mantua, Cuba, was measured at magnitude 6.1 by the U.S. Geological Survey and was felt across portions of Florida. A second earthquake near the same area occurred on June 15, underscoring that seismic activity can continue after a significant event.
RECOMMENDED ACTIONS
For homeowners, HOAs, marinas, and waterfront businesses, Crocker Marine Services recommends using the start of hurricane season to:
- Inspect seawalls for cracking, settlement, or signs of movement.
- Evaluate docks and pilings for wear or structural concerns.
- Check boat lifts and hardware for proper operation and corrosion.
- Document current conditions with photographs or a professional inspection report.
- Address maintenance issues before emergency demand increases during storm season.
Joshua Pleasant, CEO of Crocker Marine Services, said pre-storm documentation can be invaluable after a hurricane.
"When severe weather strikes, property owners often wish they had a clear record of what their waterfront looked like beforehand. Professional inspections and photographic documentation help establish a baseline, simplify maintenance planning, and may assist owners when assessing post-storm changes." Joshua Pleasant, CEO, Crocker Marine Services
The company also emphasized that preparation extends beyond protecting structures—it helps protect families, neighbors, and the broader waterfront community.
"Southwest Florida has rebuilt together after major storms before. Our goal is to help people prepare before disaster, reduce uncertainty, and preserve the waterfront investments that support our homes, businesses, and local economy." Clayton Crocker, Founder & COO, Crocker Marine Services
Historically, contractor schedules tighten quickly as named storms approach the Gulf Coast. Crocker Marine Services encourages waterfront owners from Marco Island to Sarasota to complete inspections and any recommended repairs early rather than waiting until a storm is forecast.
